YouTube Creator Inspired by Roto-toms

In his first drum set creation of the year, David Raouf (more widely known as the YouTube creator rdavidr), partnered with Steve Weiss Music to create a unique 11 piece roto-tom drum set. Citing it as the largest drum kit he has ever assembled on his channel, it is no wonder the video has amassed roughly 150,000 views in less than 48 hours.

Within the first few moments of the video titled, Building a Massive ROTO TOM Drum Set!, David reveals not only what he is creating within the video, but that he has been a customer of the video's sponsor, Steve Weiss Music, since he was a high school student. He even goes as far as to cite a video on his channel published in 2007 which features the Weiss 27" China Cymbal. Needless to say, with Raouf's long standing history as a customer of Steve Weiss Music, this video was hardly just your average promotion.

Using the entire line of Weiss Roto-toms, Raouf begins by unboxing, assembling and configuring the stands and drums for his needs. Given the unique nature of his intended setup, he made several 'DIY' modifications to stands, and experimented with several different drum heads and dampening techniques to achieve his desired sound. His final kit consisted of the following drums:

It is important to note that when talking about the setup he created, Raouf notes the challenges found in obtaining the largest 18" Rototom, which is now in stock at Steve Weiss Music. This served as the unique inspiration for his creation of this video.

In addition to each of the roto-tom offerings used in the video, Raouf makes mention of several other products, most notably a custom paired set of 16" Weiss hi hats. Cutting to a clip of the company mascot, affectionately known as "King Gong", he sourced the inspiration for these cymbals as an attempt to recreate his favorite hi hat cymbals which are at a similar size and weight. Working with the Steve Weiss Sales Team in an attempt to recreate these cymbals, he praised both their sound and price point, which was below $150. The final pairing was a Weiss 16" Traditional Cast Crash Cymbal, and a slightly heavier Liberty One Elements 16" Crash Cymbal.

If the video had not already reached peak excitement for the rdavidr community, Raouf introduces special guest and noted metal drummer Dave Witte of the band Municipal Waste to properly demonstrate the unique roto-tom based double bass configuration. Witte's involvement in the video was met with praise by subscribers via the comment section, noting it as a highlight of the video, and some the channel itself.

Steve Weiss Music is proud to have been a part of this video with rdavidr that brought a unique experience to viewers, and a new lens to the use of Weiss Roto-Toms. As a company of drummers and percussionists, contributing to unique content like this is a fulfilling way to stay involved and current with our customers, and the greater percussive community.
